CharLES - the Large Eddy Simulation module from Cascade Technologies – is currently being used to simulate turbulent combustion using a Flamelet Progress Variable (FPV) approach. The FPV approach allows the computation of the chemistry to be performed independently of the combustor simulations: as a result, computational costs are drastically decreased, yet simulation of complex chemical mechanisms is allowed. Several advanced combustion models are incorporated to accurately simulate premixed, non-premixed and partially premixed flames, including prediction of NOx and CO formation. Moreover, liquid fuel sprays are described using a Lagrangian particle tracking method that includes models for breakup, particle drag, and evaporation. As an example, the application of this tool to an afterburner from a military aircraft is shown on the right.
